These stone monoliths were formed of "Cedar Mesa sandstone on top of sloping bases of Halgaito shale. Over the millennia, the softer shale has eroded more quickly,, causing the sandstone to fracture vertically into the towering formations." (Moon Handbooks - Four Corners, 2003)
